পানি আমাদের পরিবেশের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উপাদান। এটি প্রকৃতির একটি প্রয়োজনীয় উপাদান কারণ এটি পৃথিবীতে সমস্ত ধরণের জীবন বাঁচায়। বিশুদ্ধ পানি স্বাস্থ্যকর তবে দূষিত পানি অত্যন্ত ক্ষতিকারক। পানির অপর নাম জীবন, কিন্তু দূষিত পানি পানে মৃত্যু ঘটতে পারে। তাই আমাদের দূষিত পানি পান করা থেকে বিরত থাকতে হবে। পানি দূষণের নানাবিধ কারন রয়েছে, তাদের মধ্যে অন্যতম প্রধান হচ্ছে কলকারখানা থেকে নির্গত রাসায়নিক বর্জ্য। এসব রাসায়নিক বর্জ্য বিভিন্ন ড্রেনের মাধ্যমে গিয়ে নদী-নালা খাল-বিলে মিশে পানি দূষিত করে। পানি দূষণের আরেকটি কারন হচ্ছে জমিতে ব্যবহিত রাসায়নিক সার এবং বিভিন্ন কীটনাশক। আবার মোটর লঞ্চ, স্টিমার থেকে নির্গত তেল, খাদ্য-বর্জ্য ইত্যাদি নদীতে ফেলার কারনে নদীর পানি দূষিত হয়। পানি দূষণের আরেকটি প্রধান কারন হচ্ছে কাঁচা টয়লেটের ব্যবহার। বিশেষ করে গ্রাম ও বস্তি এলাকাতে অস্বাস্থকর টয়লেটের ব্যবহার অনেক বেশী। যার ফলে মানুষের মল-মূত্র পুকুরের পানিতে মিশে গিয়ে পানিকে দূষিত করছে। অনেক সময় গবাদি পশুদের পুকুরে গোসল করাতে দেখা যায়। এতেও পুকুরের পানি দূষিত হয়। পানি দূষণের ফলে বিভিন্ন ধরনের ক্ষতি হয়ে থাকে, তার মধ্যে অন্যতম হচ্ছে বিভিন্ন জলজ প্রানি মারা যায়। পানি দূষণের ফলে মৎস উৎপাদন কমে যায়। ফলে পরিবেশের ভারসাম্য নষ্ট হচ্ছে। এসব দূষিত পানি পান করার কারনে দেখা দিচ্ছে ডায়রিয়াসহ বিভিন্ন পেটের সমস্যা। তাছাড়া দূষিত পানিতে গোসল করার কারনেও খোসপাঁচরা সহ নানাবিধ রোগ দেখা দিচ্ছে। সুতরাং, আমাদের পানি দূষণ রোধে কার্যকরী ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করা উচিত। পানি দূষণ রোধে সরকারের প্রয়োজনীয় পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া উচিত। সেই সাথে আমাদের আরও সচেতন হতে হবে।
