Where different types of books are brought for display and sale is called book fair. This is a very popular fair in our country. In fact, a book fair is considered as a great festival for book lovers. The fair usually held in the winter season in an open place in most of the major cities of our country. The main purpose of the book fair is not to sell books, but to display books. Book fairs are usually organized on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, Victory Day, and Independence Day. The top publications of the country set up stalls at the book fair where all their published new and old books are available.
The book fair usually sells all kinds of books including novels, poetry, science fiction, children’s books, religious books. A festive atmosphere prevails all around. Eminent poets, writers, artists, and intellectuals gathered there and participated in various seminars and cultural programs. Last year, I went to Ekushey Book Fair, the most popular book fair held on the premises of Bangla Academy. My personal opinion about a book fair is that it can play an important role in arousing interest in reading books among the people. It is a component of education, culture, and knowledge development. Just as a good book can change a life, so a book fair can change our society.

The first starts on 1st January and the second starts on 1st February. The two book fairs are very popular and book lovers from all over the country participate in the fair. Book fairs are very important for a developing country like Bangladesh. We all know that our country’s literacy rate is about 31%, which is negligible. Again, there are very few educated people who read books regularly. Undoubtedly, the number of readers and book lovers will increase as a result of organizing this kind of fair. Nations that do not read books cannot improve. So we should read more and more books. A book fair is a great idea of the modern era. We should all try our best to organize a book fair more than twice a year. We should all buy and read books, as well as encourage others to read. Moreover, we can give books as gifts to others.

বাংলাদেশে প্রতিবছর প্রধান দুটি বই মেলা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়ে থাকে: একটি হচ্ছে ঢাকা বই মেলা যা জাতীয় গ্রন্থ কেন্দ্রের পৃষ্ঠপোষকতায় আয়োজিত হয়ে থাকে, এবং অপরটি হচ্ছে বাংলা একাডেমী কর্তৃক আয়োজিত একুশে বই মেলা। প্রথমটি ১লা জানুয়ারিতে থেকে এবং দ্বিতীয়টি ১লা ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে শুরু হয়ে থাকে। দুটি বই মেলাই বেশ জনপ্রিয় এবং সারাদেশ থেকে বইপ্রেমীরা মেলাতে অংশগ্রহণ করে থাকে। বাংলাদেশের মতো উন্নয়নশীল দেশের জন্য বই মেলা অত্যন্ত জরুরি। আমরা সকলেই জানি যে আমাদের দেশের সাক্ষরতার হার প্রায় ৩১%, যা খুবই নগণ্য। আবার যারা শিক্ষিত তাদের মধ্যে খুব কম সংখ্যকই আছেন যারা নিয়মিত বই পড়ে থাকেন। নিঃসন্দেহে, এই ধরণের মেলার আয়োজনের ফলে পাঠক এবং বইপ্রেমীর সংখ্যা বাড়বে। যে জাতি বই পড়ে না তারা উন্নতি করতে পারে না। সুতরাং আমাদের আরও বেশি বেশি করে বই পড়া উচিত। একটি বই মেলা আধুনিক যুগের একটি দুর্দান্ত ধারণা। আমাদের সকলেরই বছরে দু’বারের বেশি বই মেলা স্থাপনে সহায়তা করা উচিত। বছরে দু’বারের বেশি কিভাবে বই মেলার আয়োজন করা যায় সে ব্যাপারে আমাদের সকলেরই সর্বাত্মক চেষ্টা করা উচিত। আমাদের সবার উচিত বই কেনা এবং পড়া, সাথে সাথে অন্যদেরকে বই পড়ার প্রতি উৎসাহিত করা। তাছাড়া আমরা অন্যদেরকে বই উপহার দিতে পারি।
